Guide To Detect Fake Gemstones

To know if a gemstone is real or fake is highly important. You do not want to buy gemstone online and end up paying more than its value. Why should you pay a great deal of money for something fake?

At the first glance of a gemstone you may not be able to differentiate between what is real and fake. You will need to focus closely and look for the signs. Imitation or stimulated stones appear real but it is their physical characteristics that are far from real gemstones.

All natural stones like natural opal have some inclusions that make it easier for a gemologist to distinguish between a real or fake gem. This means that if you are being sold a gem that appears to be perfect, it is most likely that it could be a synthetic one that has undergone treatments in a lab.

Although about 90 percent of gemstones are treated to enhance their visual properties and beauty, a gem dealer will share the real information about its lab treatment to ensure it is real.

Natural gems are ones that are not treated in a lab and are naturally beautiful without any enhancements. Real gemstones like natural amethyst have less of a sparkle than synthetic ones. They are also lighter than synthetic gemstones as no chemicals are added.

A fake gemstone can either be a lab created stone or a glass stone. Though lab created stones do not have any inclusions as they are filled or hidden, a glass stone can have scratches on it or tiny bubbles in it. A fake gemstone will have uneven colour and luster as it has been dyed to hide its defects or flaws.

The best way to know you are buying a genuine gemstone is to check if it comes with a certification of Gemological Institute of America Appraisal (GIA). If you are not convinced about the certificate you can always take the gemstone to a gemologists who can easily separate the real one from the fake lot.
